University of Deusto in Spain selects Alcatel-Lucent to connect students and researchers with access to advanced services across the university network

Alcatel-Lucent (Paris: Euronext and NYSE: ALU) announced today it has been selected by the University of Deusto, one of the most prestigious universities in Spain, to deploy a fixed and mobile network in its CRAI (Resources Center for Learning and Research) building. The new network will provide to the almost 1,500 people at the University a wider range of services and a richer user experience.

Thanks to this solution deployment, installed by Ambar Telecomunicaciones, the Alcatel-Lucent Business Partner for this project, the new CRAI building is now integrated with the University’s communications network to enable students, teachers, researchers and staff to use all the services supported by the network, access information in real time and facilitate more productive work.

The new CRAI Library is built as a Resources Center for Learning and Research, a place for continuous training and a cultural meeting point for students. It is designed to provide access to information resources needed for the University of Deusto community, for professors and researchers from around the world, as well as for institutions and enterprises.

The new solution will serve more than 40 professionals supporting the different CRAI services connected to the network, including voice services (IP Telephony) as well as access to information services such as user service, cataloguing, borrowing service, space bookings. More than 60 job carrels designed for teachers and researchers will be equipped with voice and data services access via LAN. Additionally, the network will serve 1,400 student and pupil teamwork desks distributed in reference and multimedia rooms, with more than 100 personal computers connected and other spaces as study rooms, seminars, practices and work rooms with access to ICT services through the WiFi network.

Iñaki Fuertes, IT Director at the University of Deusto, said, “We appreciate the exceptional effort and service quality that we have experienced in this project to deploy the new CRAI building communications network.Despite the short time frame to develop the project, the final result has been very positive and strengthens our trust in Alcatel-Lucent and Ambar Telecommunications. I am confident our fruitful collaboration with these technology partners will continue in future projects for the coming year.”

„Wireless technologies are mature and provide the security, availability and ease of use that universities require to provide differentiated service to employees and students. Customers like University of Deusto leading the industry by leveraging their investment in communications to differentiate themselves and their programs”, said Rafael Martinez, Alcatel-Lucent’s Marketing Director for enterprise solutions in Iberia.

According to David Salces, Project Manager at Ambar Telecomunicaciones, „We have achieved the main customer expectations and requirements in the project implementation. Both at the technology level, with a network design for high availability, as in the deadlines established by the customer, which were really tight due to the need to meet the building’s opening date. This has required a great effort for all parties involved in the project”.

The solution for the fixed network is based on the OmniSwitch 6850 technology, the family of Alcatel-Lucent Gigabit Ethernet Level 3 switches with a redundant design for high availability.

For the wireless network, the solution installed is a centralized switching system based on an OmniAccess Wireless 6000 controller with a capacity of up to 128 access points, and 64 access points AP-61 distributed in the building different floors to provide a wide area of in-building Wi-Fi coverage.About University of Deusto

Alcatel-Lucent’s Rich Communications Manager named „Most Innovative Mobile Application” at 2009 Andrew Seybold Choice Awards

– Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) announced its Rich Communications Manager, which delivers the next generation of unified rich messaging through a single web portal – providing enhanced messaging and communications to fixed, mobile, and IP devices – has been selected as this year’s Most Innovative Mobile Application at the Andrew Seybold Choice Awards.

With this new functionality, fixed and mobile end users can retrieve, view, respond, and forward video, photos and text from a web portal that also integrates address books between user devices. Leveraging familiar, intuitive desktop concepts, subscribers can now easily drag and drop content across voice mail, SMS, MMS, email, faxes, calendars, and address books. In addition to eliminating the traditional barriers between various networks by making all mobile and PC communications visible in one place, the Rich Communications Manager eliminates multiple logins, user interfaces and contexts defined by different messaging applications.

The Rich Communications Manager provides end users with the convenience of accessing and managing their rich communications at home, work and on mobile phones. It also allows them to visually see a converged message queue, as well as originate and listen to voice mail messages online. It also provides voice to text functionality to allow users to read a voicemail transcription.

The Andrew Seybold Choice Awards have come to be recognized throughout the industry for their ability to identify cutting-edge products and services that offer innovation and impact to both wireless providers and end-users. Criteria used in choosing 2009 award winners included solving a long-standing problem, innovative approach, efficient use of resources, ease of use, potential to attract more customers to wireless voice and data services, as well as functionality, features and price.

„Each of this year’s award winners have made significant progress in simplifying the user experience, which is critical to expansion in the wireless industry,” said Andrew Seybold, President and CEO of Andrew Seybold, Inc. „Alcatel-Lucent has gone a step further by also supporting unified messaging access across all devices to conveniently follow the end user.”

„We are excited to receive this recognition for the Rich Communications Manager on the heels of its recent general availability announcement and debut at CTIA Showstoppers,” said Gani Nayak, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s Rich Communications business. „The award validates the tremendous potential we believe this product has for service provider differentiation, subscriber stickiness and quickly bringing unifying new services to market.”

At CTIA, Alcatel-Lucent is also showcasing the next generation of this technology – a Rich Communication Suite-based ‘communications widget’ that can be leveraged in mash-ups with third party applications to provide intuitive, trusted communications and messaging capability directly in the third party portal. This future capability of the Rich Communication Manager is consistent with Alcatel-Lucent’s application enablement strategy and helps the network provider generate value by exposing communication and messaging capabilities to developers in a managed and controlled way.

Alcatel-Lucent enhances its packet microwave transport offering to cost-effectively support wireless broadband services

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced the enhancement of its packet microwave radio portfolio with new capabilities to fully leverage fixed and mobile operators’ existing investments in microwave backhaul networks. This enhancement will offer them the added capacity that will be needed to evolve – profitably — to next generation wireless broadband (including LTE).

LTE is a new wireless broadband technology that offers data speeds comparable to the fastest fixed broadband technologies, and offers significantly reduced latency to ensure a high-quality end-user experience for real-time, multimedia services. The anticipated increase in consumer and business use of wireless broadband services with the introduction of LTE networks also is expected to drive the need for expanded backhaul capabilities to deal with the challenge of transporting the resulting data traffic.

To meet this need, Alcatel-Lucent – under a global agreement — will integrate multi-gigabit millimeter wave radios from BridgeWave, the leader in gigabit wireless solutions, into its 9500 Microwave Packet Radio (MPR) transmission solutions. This advancement will expand the frequency range covered by the 9500 MPR with the high-frequency 60-90 GHz spectrum to provide customers up to 2.6 Gbps of capacity, sufficient to support the anticipated transport requirements for 2G, 3G and 4G networks.

“Offering the most cost-effective mobile transport network that maximizes the relationship between cost and capacity is critical to delivering greater profitability for mobile network operators, and a better service experience for end-users,” said Philippe Dumont, head of wireless transmission activities for Alcatel-Lucent. “After an exhaustive evaluation of all millimeter wave solutions on the market, we selected BridgeWave’s gigabit wireless technology due to its superior combination of performance and capacity, as well as its attractive feature set that makes it a perfect complement to our industry-leading microwave transport portfolio.”

“We are proud to collaborate with Alcatel-Lucent, a company with a clear strategic vision for an open LTE ecosystem,” said Amir Makleff, President and CEO at BridgeWave Communications. “Our expertise and leadership in the 80GHz spectrum combined with Alcatel-Lucent’s broad product offering and support organization provides customers with an attractive combination of technology and solutions.”

With these enhancements, Alcatel-Lucent is further enhancing its Mobile Evolution Transport Architecture (META), the industry’s most comprehensive vision for the evolution of mobile networks from TDM to all-IP.

Alcatel-Lucent has historically been a leader in the North American market and has demonstrated this again in 2008 with 34.8 percent market share and the lead position in Q4 2008 (Source: Sky Light Research).

Alcatel-Lucent innovations help wireless service providers integrate CDMA and LTE services on the same network

Alcatel-Lucent innovations help wireless service providers integrate CDMA and LTE services on the same network–Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has expanded its wireless networking portfolio to enable mobile service providers to offer both 3G CDMA and Long Term Evolution (LTE) services using a common network infrastructure. Alcatel-Lucent’s innovative “Converged RAN” (radio access network) offerings support the delivery of a wide variety of new wireless broadband services while simultaneously reducing power consumption – and attendant carbon footprint — and lowering operating costs.

Alcatel-Lucent’s Converged RAN offerings build on Alcatel-Lucent’s long-standing commitment to support multiple technology standards in a common base station platform, helping ensure that investments made today will be protected in the future as networks evolve. One of the key elements of the Converged RAN is the software defined radio (SDR) technology which has been available on the current Alcatel-Lucent base stations for a number of years already. The SDR enables CDMA service providers to deploy one technology today and then upgrade smoothly to a more advanced standard, such as LTE, in the future, or even introduce both technologies in the same existing base station simultaneously.

The latest addition to Alcatel-Lucent’s Converged RAN portfolio is the Alcatel-Lucent 9238 Base Station Macro, a new platform that relies on the SDR which is integrated with the amplifiers to provide optimal power efficiency. The architecture enables CDMA and/or LTE baseband units to be mixed and matched in the same cabinet to support a variety of technology combinations. Multiple frequencies and frequency combinations will be supported in a single footprint, making the 9238 Base Station Macro an extremely flexible product that is ideally suited to help operators refresh and/or renovate their networks.

In addition to its flexibility and performance benefits, the new platform can dramatically reduce operational expenses. Through a combination of improved reliability, greatly reduced power consumption — nearly 75 percent over earlier generations of equipment — and use of common components to minimize the need for spares, the platform offers an array of cost benefits.

“With the newest additions to our CDMA Converged Base Station portfolio, Alcatel-Lucent has demonstrated once again our unwavering commitment to giving our customers optimum flexibility as they expand and evolve their wireless broadband service offerings,” said Sandy Motley, head of Alcatel-Lucent’s CDMA/EV-DO activities. “By providing a smooth evolution path to LTE, ensuring maximum re-use of equipment and dramatically reducing energy consumption, we also are helping our customers lower their carbon footprint while at the same time returning cash to their bottom line through reduced operating costs.”

Key elements of Alcatel-Lucent’s CDMA Converged Base Station portfolio are being demonstrated in the company’s booth #6714 at the CTIA Wireless Tradeshow and Exhibition at the Las Vegas Convention center from April 1 – April 4.
