Telefónica and Vodafone announce milestone pan European collaboration

Telefónica and Vodafone announce milestone pan European collaboration

• Companies to share network infrastructure in Germany, Spain, Ireland and the UK with detailed discussions ongoing in the Czech Republic
• Agreements anticipated to deliver cost efficiencies of hundreds of millions of euros for each company over 10 years
• Further savings in related areas being explored

Madrid & Newbury, 23 March 2009. – Telefónica and Vodafone, two of the world’s largest telecommunications operators, today announce a wide-ranging strategic programme to share mobile network assets across selected European operations.

As part of the collaboration, Telefónica and Vodafone are actively exploring opportunities to cooperate in related areas such as the provision of transmission services.

Telefónica and Vodafone will use the agreements to aid the roll out of their respective networks, enhancing service quality for customers in the longer term. The agreements will also reduce the environmental impact of both companies’ roll out activities, due to the consolidation of existing sites and joint build of new sites.

The programme is expected to deliver significant business benefits in the process, including the generation of cost savings amounting to hundreds of millions of euros for both companies over the next 10 years.

The infrastructure sharing initiatives are broadly expected to enable both companies to

– Offer enhanced quality of service levels within the network footprint to improve customers’ mobile experience as well as support the delivery of services such as mobile broadband to a greater number of customers across a wider coverage area

– Reduce the environmental impact of the network by lowering the number of sites required by each company

– Reduce network operating costs

– Continue to manage their traffic independently

– Jointly build new sites where opportunities exist

Matthew Key, CEO of Telefónica Europe, commented: “In a fast changing business climate, operators need to look at different ways to serve customers both now and in the future. This industry-leading collaboration means that Telefónica and Vodafone will continue to compete strongly against each other in local markets, while giving our customers enhanced mobile coverage in more places, using fewer mast sites. This will also create significant benefits for Telefónica shareholders. We are actively exploring additional areas for cooperation and, by reducing our costs in areas of the business that customers don’t see, we can ensure that we invest in areas they truly value.

Michel Combes, CEO, Vodafone Europe, said: “Vodafone has led the market in developing effective network sharing business models, and continues to drive the scale and scope of such agreements. This is a further example of Vodafone’s ongoing commitment to deliver the highest levels of service quality for our customers while delivering greater cost efficiencies to the business. This move will enable us to focus our resources on developing more innovative and market leading services while delivering on our pledge to reduce the environmental impact of our network roll out.”

Delivering Benefits to Customers

Under the programme, customers in these selected markets can expect to benefit from long-term improvements to coverage, particularly for services such as mobile broadband. By reducing network costs, both companies will be able to continue to invest in developing innovative products and services for customers.

The joint building of new sites and/or consolidation of existing 2G and 3G mast sites, with one site housing the equipment of both companies where previously two would have been used, is expected to lead to a significant reduction in the total number of masts in operation and reduced environmental impact, compared to both companies expanding their networks separately.

The collaboration will also enable both companies to enhance service quality within the network footprint at a faster rate than before, and help to deliver services such as mobile broadband to a wider population.

Shared efficiencies

Where opportunities exist, long-term cost and operational efficiencies will be realised through jointly building new sites and consolidating existing masts and antennas.

There will be reduced capital and operating expenditure arising from the fewer number of sites required, with significant savings anticipated by both companies over 10 years.

In addition, further areas of co-operation are actively being explored on a market by market basis, such as sharing of transmission infrastructure, among others.

Further Detail :

Germany: Both companies to share existing 2G and 3G sites. Shared masts can also be used for microwave backhaul.

Ireland: Both companies to open all network sites for sharing by the other party. New build will also be conducted jointly where roll-out plans are aligned.

Spain: Both companies to extend existing site share agreement from 2007, which includes the shared usage of power, cabinets and mast. To date 2,200 sites are shared under this agreement. During 2009 and 2010 additional sites will be included.

UK: Both companies to focus on joint build of new sites and consolidation of existing 2G and 3G sites.

-ends-
Notes to Editors:

Principles of network sharing: In the UK and Ireland, the elements of the network to be shared include: masts, antennas, sites, cabinets and power supply. The network electronics Nodes B (3G), BTS (2G) and the radio network controllers which are linked to the core network are to remain independent. In Germany and Spain, masts and cabinets are shared, along with power supply.

Paris, France – 16 February 2009 – Parrot, worldwide leader for wireless peripherals around the mobile phone, and LG Electronics (LG), a worldwide technology and design leader in mobile communications, have joined forces for the development of innovative and interoperable NFC (Near Field Communication) services on LG’s KU380-NFC phone.

LG’s KU380-NFC phone, which is among the first NFC-enabled handsets, by taking advantage of the ST21NFCA capabilities to support both NFC card-emulation and reader modes, offers now enhanced functionalities with Parrot’s NFC enabled products.

Besides payment and transport applications, Parrot, as the only company developing consumer electronic NFC enabled products, propose a new way to connect devices by using the NFC technology. Now, such services are available on the KU380-NFC phone, using its reader mode capabilities offered by ST’s ST21NFCA chip.

Automatic pictures transfer from the KU380-NFC phone to the Parrot Specchio by Martin Szekely new NFC enabled digital photo frame is part of such new NFC services supplied by the platform combined with the ST21NFCA chip. This new feature demonstrates the Bluetooth® Pairing and NFC Card Type 4 capability based on STMicroelectronics’ Smartcard chip ST23YR80. Other reader mode applications like the dynamic Smart Posters Frame are also developed currently by Parrot.

Using an open architecture with the latest ETSI standards, such as the Host Controller Interface (HCI), Single Wire Protocol (SWP) for communication with the (U)SIM card, in addition to 13.56MHz-based RF communication standards, the KU380-NFC is able to store card-based services as electronic coupons, affinity cards proposed by Parrot’s platform.

This does represent valuable services an enterprise can offer to consumers as it could take the form of multiple applications, from the simple sharing of information to promotional activities.

At the occasion of the Mobile World Congress, Parrot will show demos of Bluetooth-NFC pairing and dynamic tag platform on its booth: Hall 2.1 – Booth A63.

New Parrot by Philippe Starck wireless stereo speakers

New Parrot by Philippe Starck

Wireless stereo speakers

A visionary creation, a true prodigy of technology,
For a new relationship to sound

Paris, 28 January 2009 – Parrot, the specialist in wireless mobile telephony devices, is today unveiling its latest product: ‚Zikmu’, the Parrot by Philippe Starck set of wireless speakers. Parrot are also proud to announce that the ‚Zikmu’, the Parrot by Philippe Starck recently won 1st prize at the 4th annual Bluetooth SIG Best of CES contest in Las Vegas.

To discover an object or a place designed by Philippe Starck is to walk into a world of vivid imagination and to live a fantasy. For more than 30 years, this unconventional creator, designer and architect has been boldly present in our everyday life, creating iconic destinations that are pure poetry and change the vision of life and objects that are „good” before they are beautiful.

Born from the elegance of minimum and an absolute technology, the Parrot by Philippe Starck wireless speakers, with their aerial curves and dense black lacquered colour, inscribe themselves in timelessness.

„These speakers are thoroughly modern, thanks to all their technical specifications, but also because they represent the least possible,” explains Philippe Starck. „They feature the most extreme and formidable technology with the fewest possible materials to deliver maximum effect: that is the magic.”

Parrot and the wonders of wireless technology

The Parrot by Starck speakers stand on the cutting edge of new wireless technologies: whatever the source, the Parrot by Starck speakers faithfully reproduce all your tracks without any wires in sight.

„The way we listen to music has radically changed: when I was a kid, you took an LP, you put it on the record player and then you listened to it,” explains Henri Seydoux, CEO and founder of Parrot. „Nowadays, you carry your music around with you, which can come from a wide range of sources. With the Parrot by Philippe Starck speakers, we wanted to create an eye-catching product to accompany these new ways of enjoying music,” Henri Seydoux adds.

Discover the match made in heaven between an iPod®/iPhone™ and these irrepressible speakers. The Parrot by Starck speakers have been designed for compatibility with the entire range of latest generation Apple players. Using the docking station built into one of the columns, you can enjoy your favourite music while recharging your player. In addition, control your speakers and your iPhone™ / iPod® from the comfort of your sofa using the smart remote control.

Also take advantage of the tracks stored on your PC by streaming them to the speakers via Wi-Fi or unleash the music stored on your mobile phone, PC or Mac® thanks to the Bluetooth® stereo (A2DP) wireless technology. You will never grow tired of discovering the wide range of different uses available with the Parrot by Starck speakers.

Say goodbye to those unsightly wires – the two speakers communicate with each other using Bluetooth technology: at last, take advantage of true stereo sound by positioning the speakers wherever you want in the room.

Prodigious 360° immersive sound

With the Parrot by Starck speakers, discover NXT™ technology that revolutionises the face of acoustic design: an extra-flat membrane creates small-scale vibrations across its entire surface to faithfully reproduce the medium and treble frequencies, optimally radiating sound from both sides of the speaker. Take advantage of the 360° immersive sound, wherever you happen to be in relation to the speakers.

„We were not aiming to create just another speaker,” says Philippe Starck. „Our design focused more on making the air vibrate. There is actually a three-dimensional feel to the vibration, meaning that the air is palpable, almost humanlike in presence, like a fragrance.”

Regardless of the size of the room and the position of the columns, the sound will adapt to the acoustics. A 100W total power output will immerse you in unrivalled precision, crystal-clear sound. A special acoustic hollow has been carefully engineered into the lower part of the speakers to give the bass frequencies maximum depth.

The size of the speakers (75 cm) has been specially designed to maximise listening quality when sitting on the sofa or at the desk for an optimal sound experience every day.

The Parrot by Starck wireless speakers will be available in Spring 2009 on http://www.parrotshopping.com at £1200 inc. VAT, followed by the brand’s usual retailers (department stores, etc.).
