LG Bridges the Gap between Ideas and Reality

Barcelona, Spain, February, 16, 2009 – LG Electronics, a worldwide technology and design leader in mobile communications, will introduce its latest innovations, newest handsets and strategic direction for this year at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona, Spain. Topping LG’s achievements is its direct, intuitive and dynamic 3D S-Class User Interface (UI), which will debut on the ARENA handset (LG-KM900).

Other highlights include several world firsts like the sensational 3G Touch Watch Phone (LG-GD910) and an LTE-based handset modem chip.

“The products and technologies we will unveil at Mobile World Congress were thought impossible not long ago, but now we’re proving just how possible they are,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President & CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “We have based our products on insight from consumers, turning their ideas into reality.”

LG’s new S-Class UI, which will become standard on the company’s high-end handsets, is a totally new interface designed specifically to leverage the advantages of touchscreens. Based around a 3D cube layout with four customizable home screens, S-Class UI eliminates nested menus wherever possible and provides direct access to applications and features. This dynamic interface, with rich graphics changes instantly to fit the task at hand and is the result of LG thinking “what if?” when trying to create the most intuitive interface in the mobile industry. Moreover, a powerful AMD processor ensures that it always runs at top speed.

The first handset that will benefit from the S-Class UI is ARENA, LG’s new flagship model for 2009. This fully-loaded multimedia phone includes a large 3.0-inch full touchscreen with razor sharp WVGA resolution. It achieves a previously unthinkable level of audio quality with all its multimedia features, thanks to Dolby Mobile; even more impressively, a 5 megapixel camera captures incredible quality pictures and can also record DVD-quality video that looks great, even when played back on a large screen TV. With DivX and Xvid video playback support, ARENA is the perfectly convenient multimedia companion.

Wearable mobile devices, until recently just science fiction, will be another highlight of the show. On hand will be LG’s 3G Touch Watch Phone, which was a major hit at Consumer Electronics Show earlier in the year. This is the first market-ready wearable 3G phone and comes with a Bluetooth headset, touchscreen interface and built-in camera for video calls. LG’s PRADA Link (LG-LBA-T950) is a designer accent to the PRADA Phone by LG (LG-KF900). Connecting wirelessly by Bluetooth to the PRADA Phone by LG, PRADA Link provides instant access to text messages and many features without having to take the phone out from a purse or pocket.

LG will demonstrate the world’s first handset modem chip based on Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. This chip, with a previously unimaginable top download speed of 60 Mbps and upload speed of 20 Mbps, is the core component needed to make a market-ready 4G handset. No longer just an idea, it is nearly 10 times faster than the fastest 3G HSDPA handsets available today and LG will show how this chip can be used to simultaneously download four HD-quality videos and play them back in real-time.

Once thought impossible, LG will prove at Mobile World Congress that high technology can also be eco-friendly with the release of LG’s Solar-powered handset. A solar panel embedded on the phone’s battery cover harnesses the power of the sun to charge the battery without plugging it in. In addition, LG is introducing eco-friendly packaging, using recycled materials and soy-based inks. These initiatives prove LG’s commitment to creating a healthier and cleaner environment for everyone.

LG will hold a press conference at 2:00 p.m. on February 16, the first day of the exhibition, at the Media Center in Hall 2 of Fira de Barcelona. During the conference, LG will show off several new products and lay out its strategy for 2009.

LG Launches ARENA, Fully-Loaded Multimedia Flagship Phone for 2009

Barcelona, Spain, February, 16, 2009 – LG Electronics, a worldwide technology and design leader in mobile communications, today announced the launch of LG ARENA (LG-KM900) at the World Mobile Congress 2009. ARENA is a fully loaded multimedia phone that offers an exhilarating audio and video experience made possible by LG’s intuitive new 3D S-Class User Interface (UI).

ARENA, LG’s new flagship model for 2009, is packed with top-of-the-line multimedia features and a totally new 3D UI of the next generation. It is the first and currently the only multimedia phone for the global market to use Dolby Mobile from Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB) to deliver an exhilarating surround sound experience for video content and enhance the sound of music content.

“What really makes ARENA special is its intuitive 3D S-Class UI, which is unlike anything that has appeared on a phone before,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President & CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “We surveyed consumers and found that they were unhappy with current interfaces. They wanted a simple, fast and fun way to use multimedia and other features, but also an experience that was dynamic and interesting. We’ve done this so well with our brand new S-Class UI that it will set new standards for handsets in both functionality and fun.”

The intuitive 3D S-Class UI – S for superior – makes its debut with ARENA and will be featured in other premium LG models launching later this year.

3D S-Class User Interface

Intuitive

Intuitive and life-like touch-based 3D menus take the fuss out of searching through contacts and multimedia content, perfect for anyone more comfortable with a traditional analogue experience. Reel Scrolling lays out menus as if they were on a film reel, providing icons for each choice that are so easy-to-understand no further explanation is needed. Dragging a finger across the S-Class UI’s 3D reels allows users to scroll through entertainment options.

In ARENA’s camera mode, an intuitive on-screen dial, similar to those found on many high-end standalone camera, makes it easy to customize shot settings for picture-perfect results.

Fast

ARENA’s S-Class UI was designed from the very start to leverage the advantages of touchscreens to eliminate unnecessary menus and steps. At its core is a cube layout that provides four customizable home screens that provides fast access to all features by flipping the cube with the flick of a finger. With multiple faces, the cube allows for four times more shortcuts than a single screen, making menus easier to access.

Also created with fast access in mind are ARENA’s Elastic Lists, which make it easier to browse through contacts and other catalogued information. When touched, list items stretch like a rubber band to provide more detailed information, options or easy editing. This eliminates the extra step of switching to a new screen, saving time and making it easier to browse to other choices as well.

Fast yet smooth 3D transitions between menus are made possible by the perfect pairing of LG’s S-Class UI and a powerful AMD processor.

Fun

Colourful graphics give ARENA a sense of dynamism and fun found in no other phone. ARENA’s dynamic graphics are especially evident in the phone’s Floating Image Gallery. When held upright, the phone displays photos neatly in rows. But turn the phone on its side and the photos cascade off the screen and reappear much larger. Sliding a finger from top to bottom, shows photos taken on different days. Dragging a finger from left-to-right shows photos taken on the same day.

Going one step further, its Tactile Analogue Alarm Clock and Radio Tuner make it almost feel like moving a clock’s hands or turning an actual dial.

The S-Class UI is the perfect 3D gateway to enter ARENA’s amazing multimedia environment, which includes immersive audio and razor sharp video for the perfect portable entertainment experience.

Multimedia Features that Come Alive

ARENA is the world’s first globally released handset with Dolby Mobile surround sound. This technology unleashes the power of surround sound for movies and video and delivers rich, resonant sound for music. A range of equalizer presets to fit all genres and individual tastes make the experience even better. A built-in FM transmitter means ARENA can play music wirelessly through a car or home stereo. A standard 3.5 mm audio jack means ARENA can be paired with any headphones.

LG ARENA’s large 3.0-inch full touchscreen display has incredible WVGA resolution, which is four times sharper than QVGA. With the clearest LCD screen available on a mobile phone, ARENA is ideal for watching DVD quality DivX or Xvid movies on-the-go.

D1 recording capability captures DVD-resolution video that looks great even when played back on a large TV. For added fun and versatility, ARENA can record 120 frames per second slow motion video to catch every detail.

ARENA can handle hundreds of music and movie files with 40 GB of storage, including 8GB of internal memory and a micro SD slot. The powerful battery provides up to 30 hours of MP3 playtime and 300 hours of standby time.

The five megapixel camera goes far beyond what is found on most phones, with high-end features and incredible image quality comparable to that of a standalone camera. The ability to set the camera for auto or manual focus help perfectly preserve each moment.

ARENA’s audio, video and photos can easily be shared on social networking sites, thanks to 3G HSDPA 7.2 networks and Wi-Fi.

The phone also supports Google Mobile Service which includes Google search, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube and Google Blogs. A-GPS and geo-tagging are also possible. ARENA’s multi-touch capabilities greatly enhance the web surfing experience.

All of these powerful features are packed in ARENA’s sleek and refined metal body, perfectly sized to grab and go at 105.9 x 55.3 x 11.95 mm. Tempered glass over the touchscreen ensures long-lasting durability to keep the phone looking sophisticated and clean. ARENA will be available in silver and black titanium colour schemes.
With its official launch at the Mobile World Congress, ARENA will initially be available in Europe in March and then globally.

LG Showcases First Market-Ready 3G Touch Watch Phone at Mobile World Congress 2009

Barcelona, Spain, February, 16, 2009 – LG Electronics, a worldwide technology and design leader in mobile communications, will demonstrate the world’s first market-ready Touch Watch Phone (LG-GD910) with 3G Video Telephony (VT) service and GSM Network capabilities at Mobile World Congress 2009. The phone was a sensation when it debuted at Consumer Electronics Show in January.

During the exhibition, LG will hold live demonstrations to show how the phone can be used to make video calls. This is a unique feature among watch phones and shows how advanced LG’s wearable mobile really is. The demonstrations will take place at LG’s booth in Hall 8 of Fira de Barcelona from February 16-19, 2009.

This chic, wearable phone is a follow-up to the prototype that LG introduced in 2008 and includes a number of upgrades, such as a full touchscreen interface, 3G capabilities and video calling. Most importantly, this watch phone will actually be available for purchase.

“Our new 3G Touch Watch Phone is stylish, sophisticated and the height of technology, but it’s also undeniably fun. How else can you reenact those scenes from your favorite sci-fi or spy movie?” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “LG is the first company to introduce a mobile phone with the wearable device technology. We will continue to develop category-creating products to form a new market, based on our technological leadership and design capability.”

At first glance, LG’s new Watch Phone appears to simply be a high-end timepiece. The company used materials and stylistic elements found in watches from top manufacturers to ensure that people will be comfortable wearing it for any occasion. The Watch Phone has a curved tempered glass face, high quality metal casing and is a mere 13.9mm thick.

The Watch Phone is as technologically advanced as it is stylish. It is the first touch watch phone in the world to feature 7.2 Mbps 3G HSDPA compatibility, enabling high-speed data transmission and video phone calls using the built-in camera.

LG did not sacrifice functionality in favor of size and the Watch Phone is fully capable of sending text messages, making phone calls, and, of course, keeping accurate time.

This is all achieved using the phone’s touchscreen interface on its 3.63cm (1.43-inch) screen and LG’s intuitive Flash Interface.
Voice recognition features, which can be used with or without a Bluetooth headset, make it easier to place calls and look up contacts.

Text to Speech (TTS) reads text messages and other information out loud for even greater convenience.

The phone also includes stereo Bluetooth and a built-in speaker for playing back music files. A large phonebook and scheduler help with organization.

“This Watch Phone is the result of a great deal of research and development, something that is very important to us at LG. We will continue to invest in creating innovative new products and technologies like this and setting trends in the mobile phone industry,” Dr. Ahn said.

In addition to video calling, The Watch Phone has other features including its Flash Interface, MP3 player, Voice Calling, Text messaging and Text to Speech. The phone will be available in Europe at the end of this year.

Orange will be the first to bring the Watch Phone across its European footprint later this year.

LG Highlights Green Initiatives for the Mobile Industry

Barcelona, Spain, February, 16, 2009 – LG Electronics, a worldwide technology and design leader in mobile communications, today unveiled its eco-friendly mobile phone equipped with a solar panel battery cover at the Mobile World Congress 2009. This Solar-powered handset is part of the company’s aggressive green initiative, proving LG’s commitment to creating a healthier environment for everyone.

“Using renewable solar energy in the mobile handset is an example of our ongoing efforts to help create a safer, cleaner environment for our customers,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “LG continues to research and invest in creating products that not only provide a better experience for consumers, but also encourage an environmentally responsible lifestyle.”

The phone’s solar power system is embedded onto the battery cover, to conveniently harness the sun’s limitless and pollution-free energy.

By simply pointing the phone’s solar panel at natural light, the panel will convert solar energy into electricity without needing to be plugged in. Exposing the panel to the sun for ten minutes will give the phone enough power for a three-minute call, making it the perfect companion for emergency situations when no power is available to charge a dead battery. If left in natural light for long periods, the solar panel creates enough standby power to power the phone without any charging devices. LG plans to release this eco-friendly phone in the European market at the end of this year.

LG’s green initiative has not stopped at phones. The company’s LG HFB-500 Bluetooth solar car kit, first introduced at this January’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, gives customers hands-free mobile use in a fully rechargeable solar unit. In addition, LG is introducing green packaging to its entire line of 2009 mobile handset models. The eco-friendly packaging saves natural resources and promotes easy recycling by printing with soy inks and using recycled paper and cardboard without laminate coating. LG will also expand the use of its eco-friendly product manuals, produced with soy ink and recycled paper, to a broader range of models in 2009.

LG is also taking a step forward in reducing the use of hazardous substances in its products and instead using sustainable ones. LG adheres to strict requirements administered by the EU’s RoHS regarding the management of hazardous substances including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) in its production processes.

The company also plans to make its mobile handsets free of halogenated substances, a known endocrine disruptor, by removing Brominated flame retardants (BFR), chlorinated flame retardants (CFR) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from the manufacturing process by 2010 and will make all handsets antimony-free by 2012.

LG recently announced its “Life’s Good When It’s Green” initiative, the foundation of its global sustainability program at Consumer Electronics Show 2009. The worldwide program focuses on sustainability through Eco-Design and Eco-Products, the reduction of hazardous substances, responsible take-back programs and recycling facilities, and addressing global climate change.

The LG Solar-powered handset, Bluetooth solar car kit and new green packaging will all be showcased at the Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona.

LG to Demonstrate the World’s First LTE-Enabled Mobile Device

8 marca, 2009 Dodaj komentarz

LG to Demonstrate the World’s First LTE-Enabled Mobile Device

-What: Demonstration of LG’s LTE-Enabled Mobile Device
-When: February 16 – 19, 2009
-Where: Mobile World Congress 2009, Fira de Barcelona, Hall 8

Barcelona, Spain, February, 16, 2009 – LG Electronics (LG), a worldwide technology and design leader in mobile communications, announced today that it will demonstrate the first data card based on 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology standards during the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2009. The demonstration of this device, which LG developed independently, will take place in Hall 8 at Fira de Barcelona on February 18.

LG’s data card will be using LG’s own developed modem chip solution. The modem chip is the most crucial component required to create a viable 4G handset with LTE technology, the leading candidate to become the fourth generation mobile phone technology standard. LG’s development of this chip represents a significant step toward creating a market-ready 4G** phone. Handsets based on the LTE standard can theoretically support maximum wireless download speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of 50 Mbps when using 2 antennas.

Details about LG’s Demonstration
For its demonstration, LG will display its versatility with its data card solution by connecting three data cards to 3 different devices. These devices include a laptop, a netbook and a prototype mobile internet device (MID). In addition, LG will display an early smartphone prototype with LTE built into the device. The four devices will run applications such as HD video streaming, video conferencing, Video on Demand and internet browsing.

The chip that LG will demonstrate can achieve wireless download speeds of 60 Mbps and upload speeds of 20 Mbps. The fastest phones currently on the market use HSDPA technology and download at a maximum speed of 7.6 Mbps.

“The LTE handset modem chip we are demonstrating at the Mobile World Congress shows LG as a clear leader in 4G development. I am confident that when initial 4G service rolls out next year, LG will be the best positioned company to provide handsets that leverages this new technology,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President & CEO of LG Electronics’ Mobile Communications Company. “This chip is the result of significant research and development over many years and an achievement of which we are all very proud.”

About LTE
Handsets and other mobile devices that are based on LTE will be able to download multimedia and other information 10 times faster than the current 3G standard. This will mean that mobile broadband service can be as fast as or faster than conventional wired broadband.

Higher download speeds are becoming more and more important as people are increasingly using their mobile phones to watch movies, listen to music and browse the internet. Devices with LTE technology can download a 700 MB movie file in less than one minute at speeds of 100 Mbps. LTE technology would also allow consumers to simultaneously stream four HD movies without any buffering.

LG’s LTE Market Outlook and Plans
Most of the major mobile operators are pursuing LTE-based 4G technology. Because it is based on the existing 3GPP technology evolutionary path, WCDMA and CDMA service-provided carriers will be able to upgrade their networks to LTE with far less cost than building a new network based on a different technology.

According to market research company Strategy Analytics, the global LTE handset market will double from 70 million sales units in 2012 to 150 million sales units by 2013.

In addition to LTE on handsets, LG expects high-speed LTE telecommunication services to be available on Netbooks and Mobile Internet Devices in the near future.

LG Electronics Deepens Alliance with Microsoft by Selecting Windows as Primary Smartphone Platform

Barcelona, Spain, February, 16, 2009 – LG Electronics (LG) and Microsoft Corp. announced today an expanded alliance to dramatically increase the number of LG phones running Windows. As part of the agreement, LG will make Windows its primary operating system for its smartphones and will increase both the number of Windows® phones in its portfolio and the total volume of Windows® phones it distributes. This will create a tenfold increase in the volume of Windows® phones available from LG in 2009 and bring up to 26 new Windows® phones to market in 2012 alone. Overall, the agreement can result in over 50 new LG Windows® phones.

“New LG phones running Windows will take advantage of the excitement in this dynamically growing market,” said Yong Nam, vice chairman and chief executive officer, LG Electronics. “The Windows platform brings flexible and customer-friendly software that ties into the Web and the PC, giving our phones a wide range of new capabilities to address an increasing number of segments and markets.”

“Windows® phones enable people to tap into digital experiences that span their lives so they can connect to the people, information and services they care about most,” said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft. “Integrating Windows software with LG’s design leadership will bring new experiences to help enrich people’s lives.”

The agreement also includes a commitment by both companies to create joint teams for R&D, to focus on creating phones with powerful features built on tight integration between hardware and software. It also details joint marketing efforts to expand the reach of these phones at a range of prices in markets across the globe.

This agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed by LG and Microsoft on November 3, 2008, which put in place strategic collaboration on the converged mobile device business.

Complementing the expanded alliance, LG also announced the LG-GM730 which incorporates LG’s signature style with a slim (11.9 mm) and seamless profile and rounded edges. The Windows phone user-friendly with features like one-click email set up and easy finger navigation while browsing with the latest version of Internet Explorer Mobile. Available in the first half of 2009 on Windows Mobile 6.1, LG will add Windows Mobile 6.5 version to their portfolio in the second half of 2009.
