Acer presents the new EcoDisplay features Professional Displays

The twentieth century has witnessed the rapid growth of the IT market and the increasing popularity of its associated technologies – computers, satellites, Internet – each contributing in no small way to driving innovation.

The growth of industry is a vital part of a nation’s economy, yet coincides with the escalating use of limited natural resources. The challenge for the new millennium is continued drive of innovation without exhausting the world’s resources. As a consequence, it is extremely important that companies start taking responsibility and exploring new roads that lead toward the development of products with the lowest impact on the environment, while meeting the user needs, functions and added-value.

Acer has already taken that new road. Each year, Acer’s investments in research and development are substantial, because the company strongly believes in the need to find out new solutions that are at the same time innovative and respectful of the environment.

Acer’s efforts are based on a strong intuition: any industrial process that reduces natural energy and raw material consumption generates savings and these savings make the company more competitive yet at the same time make significant contribution to protecting the world’s resources.

Also, buying environmentally friendly products can significantly reduce costs for business. More energy efficient equipment means less heat, longer product life, lower air conditioning on top energy savings. In the long run, buying eco-products can be a very smart choice.

Acer’s has developed a complete new range of professional displays taking into account all environmental issues. The new Business and Value LCD models have an energy saving design, use eco-compatible materials and are free of hazardous substances. These models have been certified by the most known programs devoted to promote the production of energy efficient and eco-compatible equipment, such as Energy Star, EPEAT and TCO.

Now it’s time to increase the user awareness of the importance of buying eco-friendly equipment. It is important, too, to help users understand the features and benefits of the product they are buying. This is why Acer new monitors feature a label clearly indicating the green features of the product. The label will be printed on the packaging and a sticker will be placed on the base of the monitor. The label will help user easily identify the monitor as compliant with all internationally recognized standards for energy saving and use of eco-friendly materials.

Acer displays featuring the EcoDisplay logo are mercury free and certified by Energy Star 5.0, qualified under EPEAT Gold and TCO. Critical to any home or office environment is the cost of energy or power consumption, the new Acer EcoDisplays integrate a two lamp system instead of the standard four lamps and as a consequence the displays consume up to 50% less power hence reducing costs dramatically.

Philips acquires lighting controls company Dynalite in Australia

Further strengthens Philips’ position to lead the global switch to energy-efficient lighting solutions

Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Sydney, Australia – Royal Philips Electronics (AEX: PHI, NYSE: PHG) announced today that it has acquired Dynalite, a leading maker of lighting controls headquartered in Sydney, Australia. Dynalite has become part of the Lighting Electronics business within the Philips Lighting sector. Financial details of this agreement were not disclosed.

„Sophisticated lighting control systems can provide our customers with significant cost and energy savings. A variety of lighting control methods present a solution to suit any setting, ensuring that energy is not consumed unnecessarily, while providing the user with complete flexibility and control over their environment. As such, the acquisition of Dynalite enables us to further strengthen our offering of integral energy management solutions to major corporations, property developers and hotel groups,” said Rudy Provoost, Chief Executive of Philips’ Lighting sector. „Having a prominent lighting controls business will help us to further capitalize on the growing demand for energy saving solutions. This is fueled by trends towards net zero CO2 buildings and the accelerating global switch to green energy saving solutions, partly enforced by increasing government legislations.”

Dynalite was founded in 1989 and has since become a prominent lighting control company with its energy management and building automation, architectural lighting control, home automation and residential applications solutions. The company, with offices in Australia, the U.K., China and Dubai has around 130 employees. Dynalite posted a double-digit profit margin and sales growth in 2008; a performance which is expected to continue in years to come as it starts leveraging Philips’ existing global distribution channels.

With the acquisition of Dynalite, Philips significantly expands its existing lighting controls business. The combination will have a prominent position in the global lighting controls industry with an estimated total market value of approximately EUR 2 billion. The acquisition also expands Philips’ green products portfolio, and further secures its position to lead the global shift to energy-efficient lighting solutions.

U.S. Department of Energy honors Philips for significant advancement in LED lighting

Award recognizes highly-efficient LED replacement lamp in development

Burlington, MA, United States – Philips Color Kinetics has been honored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), receiving an award for “Significant Achievement in Solid-State Lighting Research & Development.” The award recognizes Philips’ exceptional progress on an 18-month project intended to produce a highly efficient LED PAR lamp.

For the second consecutive year, Philips was one of a select few research teams honored out of the 50+ solid-state lighting projects currently being funded by the DOE.

According to test results, the lamp being developed is already significantly more efficient than comparable LED PAR 38 lamps on the market, and 4-5 times more efficient than incandescent lamps. With an ultimate performance target of approximately 70 lumens per watt, the fully realized lamp will meet or exceed the efficacy of nearly all conventional light sources.

“This is terrific recognition by the DOE of our team’s strides to date, and yet the truly exciting results are still to come,” said Jeff Cassis, CEO, Philips Color Kinetics. “The call for energy-efficient lighting choices has never been greater, and we believe this important program is on track to deliver a fully integrated lamp with widespread market potential.”

“More than a research effort, this is a program with clear-cut performance and commercialization goals that can drive LED sources further into mainstream lighting.”

The project is being funded by a $1.7 million grant from the DOE. It incorporates advanced LED package and system integration technology plus novel, highly efficient driver technology and a unique optical arrangement – accounting for all the layers required to make LEDs truly useful for general illumination.

PAR lamps are round spotlight “bulbs” that typically utilize incandescent, halogen or HID technologies – none of which can match the energy efficiency and long source life of LEDs. Furthermore, an LED PAR lamp can provide more useful light due to the directional nature of LED sources, which minimizes the loss of light within fixtures.

Separately, three of Philips’ commercially available LED luminaires recently garnered “Special Recognition” awards as part of the Next Generation Luminaires™ SSL Design Competition. This program, organized by the DOE together with the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and the International Association of Lighting Designers, is intended to promote LED luminaires that meet expectations of the commercial specification market, implicitly differentiating them from LED products that will not meet the needs of lighting designers, specifiers, and users.

Philips’ recognized products were eW® Cove Powercore, eW Profile Powercore, and eW Downlight SM Powercore. Additional information is available at http://www.ngldc.org/.

Motorola Research Reveals 64 percent of Companies Neglect WLAN Security

Motorola Research Reveals 64 percent of Companies Neglect WLAN Security

Less than half of European companies encrypt their wireless LAN data

The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today released European research indicating that 64 percent of companies are neglecting their wireless LAN security. The survey, conducted by Vanson Bourne, found that over half of large companies use the same security measures for both wired and wireless networks.

Although different types of threats and weaknesses confront wired and wireless LANs, only 47 percent of companies are using WEP or WPA encryption on their wireless networks, and less than a third (30 percent) are using any form of wireless intrusion prevention system.

“Companies would be naive to use the same security mechanisms for wired as well as wireless LANs,” said Amit Sinha, fellow and chief technologist of Motorola Enterprise Wireless LAN. “It’s surprising that companies today are not using wireless encryption standards like WPA2. The cost of a data breach is $200 – $300 per compromised record, an order of magnitude more than the cumulative cost of security technologies to prevent exposure. Prevention is always better than cure.”

IT teams today face many different security problems for wired and wireless networks, and consequently need to be aware of the need to treat these networks differently. 79 percent of organizations, for example, promote good security practise by using IT policies across the organization. However, the research also found that 51 percent of companies have no way of enforcing these policies across their network. Furthermore, with employees becoming increasingly mobile, outdoor networks and wireless hotspots in cafes may present a security ‘back door’ into the network. Indeed, 56 percent of organizations believe that many employees flout security measures by sending corporate data over completely unsecured wireless networks, such as those at wireless hotspots in cafes, rather than using some form of VPN.

“Education is vital to improving wireless network security,” continued Sinha. “Wireless introduced vulnerabilities in the corporate network that traditional security architectures cannot mitigate. A layered approach to securing the airspace that comprises of strong authentication and encryption built on industry standards such as WPA2-Enterprise along with 24×7 wireless monitoring and intrusion prevention is required.”

Furthermore, many IT teams are wasting time on security activities which could easily be automated. With 58 percent of companies spending over two hours every week, and in 24 percent of cases over 8 hours a week searching for ‘rogue’ access points, they may be missing other security threats on the network. Although it is important to spend time looking for fake access points which users may accidentally connect to, sending all their data over the ‘rogue’ AP and being intercepted by a hacker, this task could easily be automated. Solid wireless security involves not only the prevention of unauthorised access to sensitive information but also the ongoing management of the entire environment in order to identify, isolate and prevent weak spots and potential intrusions, which requires constant monitoring and complete visibility of the network.

“Companies may be wasting their time carrying out tasks manually which could be automated,” concluded Sinha. “Several industry regulations such as the payment card industry’s Data Security Standard require strong wireless security measures as well as monitoring of wireless networks at all locations for compliance. Manually validating wireless policy compliance is costly, error-prone and leaves gaps in security. Companies need to invest in robust WLAN infrastructure with 24×7 monitoring for gap-free security and cost-effective regulatory compliance.”

The research was carried out to understand how companies across Europe secure their wireless networks. The survey was undertaken by Vanson Bourne and questioned 400 IT directors at companies with over 1,000 employees across the UK, France, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain and Nordics.

Motorola Expands On Demand Platform to Enhance Support for Rapidly Growing On Demand Libraries Motorola B-3 Video Server leverages Adaptive Media Management framework to optimize service providers’ streaming, storage, and network resources

Motorola (NYSE: MOT) today introduced the Motorola B-3 Video Server, creating the broadest, most flexible lineup of solid-state on demand servers in the industry. Designed to address small- to medium-sized streaming sites, the B-3 complements the Motorola B-1, the world’s most widely deployed solid-state on demand server. When joined with the Motorola CPS1000 Content Propagation System, the Motorola on demand platform addresses the rapid growth in on demand usage and content libraries while optimizing operator storage, streaming and network resources.

The Motorola B-3 Video Server leverages industry-standard hardware to create a high-performance, highly scalable, fault tolerant server that delivers premium support for video on demand (VOD), time-shifted TV, on demand ad insertion, network DVR (nDVR), and other advanced services. Available from early Q2 09, the B-3 efficiently scales from several hundred to more than 3,000 streams and can be configured as a standalone server with integrated content library, or as an edge server deployed alongside a B-1 .

As on demand usage and libraries rapidly expand, operators require on demand networks that are flexible enough to cater to changing demands. In response, Motorola integrated Adaptive Media Management throughout its on demand portfolio. The Motorola Adaptive Media Management (AMM) algorithms were developed by analyzing data from 160 B-1 deployments encompassing 900 thousand streams worldwide. CPS1000 utilizes AMM to distribute content and assign streaming resources across the network and to share content libraries between servers. AMM enables the B-1 and B-3 servers to select the optimal storage and streaming technologies. The result is the optimization streaming and network resources, reduction in storage costs, and ability to deliver the level of choice consumers want.

“The new B-3 server expands Motorola’s on demand hardware and software portfolio, organized around the Adaptive Media Management framework,” said Sean Welch, director, on demand video for the Motorola Home and Networks Mobility business. “Adaptive Media Management enables our service provider customers to optimize their streaming, storage and network bandwidth resources, reducing operational and capital expenses even as they face unprecedented growth in on demand libraries and consumer demand for personalized media experiences.”

For more information on Motorola’s on demand portfolio, including hardware and software solutions, please visit the on demand section of Motorola’s website. Motorola will also have its on demand and content management technology on display at The Cable Show, booth #2037, CCBN in Beijing # 3502, and the IPTV World Forum in London #300. Motorola and Zebra® Mobile Printers Introduce Service to Reduce Costs

New service for partners: one-stop shop for maintenance of Zebra mobile printers

9th February 2008 –The Enterprise Mobility business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today announced that its ‘Service from the Start with Comprehensive Coverage’ service agreement has been extended to include Zebra® mobile printer products. This new service provides a three-day turnaround on the repair or replacement of Zebra® printers, including print heads.

Motorola EMb’s ‘Service from the Start – Bronze with Comprehensive Coverage for Zebra® Mobile Printers’ service offers a repair, maintenance and replacement service for both standard wear and tear of devices and accidental damage. Telephone support for the service is available in all major European languages including French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian and English as well as Polish, Czech, Slovakian and Dutch.

“Motorola continues to invest in finding new opportunities for partners to provide value-added services to customers,” said Chris Ranger, VP Motorola Enterprise Mobility Services, EMEA. “By extending our Service from the Start service agreement to include mobile Zebra® printers, we can offer the same dependable turnaround times and standard of service that our customers already receive on their Motorola products. Retailers, transportation and logistics companies, as well as public sector organisations utilize mobile computers and printers in a variety of environments where they are subjected to high levels of wear and tear. With this offering, Motorola is providing partners with another tool to help customers improve productivity and gain a significant competitive edge.”

Under the new agreement, partners can simply ship damaged Zebra® printers to their local Motorola shipping consolidation facility, and Motorola will take care of the rest. Resellers across the EU can also offer a telephone hotline, provided by Motorola to diagnose end users’ hardware problems.

“This is a key offering for the channel,” continued Ranger. “Our partners can now offer consistent service in all EU countries, have a single point of contact for all mobile computers and printers and benefit from larger discounts on volume purchases. Having a fast turnaround on repairs is imperative to channel partners today, as although partners can excel at making a sale, they can often find maintenance and ongoing care a challenge.”

Motorola and Zebra® have been Alliance Partners since 2004. This joint effort will increase synergies for resellers and allow partners to offer a unified mobile computer and printer maintenance solution to customers.
